Happy New Year! Hope everybody has a great year and a successful one in the woods. I have been covered up sorry once again for my absence, lol, Lets get caught up on whats been going on since my last post. OK. Last time it was right at the begining of November, this is my favorite time of the season right at the start of the rut. For those gun hunters who don't bow hunt they missed it again this year what a pre-rut/rut it was. My buddy and cameraman Brad scored this nice 8pt he rattled in, looks like a fighter from the broken tines to me. The shot was close and Brad watched him drop within 40 yrds of his stand.

Image

Then just a couple days later I shot this guy using the same tactics he came in to 12 yrds and when I stopped him he got the prize, a 1 3/4" Grim Reaper extra cut right through the ribs. He only went 30 yrds and was done.

Image

I know what your thinking he aint that big, well DAH! I know but he looked great on video and, well hes made out of meat LOL. I also scored om=n a couple doe to put in the freezer neither of which made it out of sight.

Doe # 2

On opening day of the gun season something strange happend....myt wife of 19 yrs did something she had never done before......she went hunting! I am still in disbelief seems like a dream to me, lol. I took her to "buck holler" and performed my antler magic with a little doe talk and BAM 2 bucks showed up in less than 5 mins after I finished my sequence. Now remember she has never hunted in her life and never shot a high power rifle as a matter of fact she has only shot her pistol and my 22 rifle. The deer came in to 75 yrds and began to walk around casually and as soon as he got in the open she let him have a hot piece of lead from my Savage 30-06. It was awsome!! As I zoomed out to her you can see the buck go down in the background along with her happy face and a little tear in her eye. I can tell you this after seeing her shooting abilities I have been watching my P's & Q's lol don't wanna be double lunged.

Image

I had to get in on the action as you can see lol a camera hog! I want to say this deer falls in the top 2 of my all time favorites the first one was David my son at age 9 his first, its a tie between the 2 of them. I love hunting with my family and really enjoy hunting with my friends. I also want to tell you about another 1st here on BTT is not a bow kill but its a first deer kill. Josh Jackson customer supprt for Starrflight took his wife Steph on her first deer hunt and she got this beaut of a muley

Image

I am jelious never shot a muley before maybe this year. NICE shooting Steph  us men are proud of you! We had a great deer season that about sums it up. Plenty of good eats in the freezer including some salami and snack sticks from Webb's Butcher Block they make the best. Lastly I wanna thank you guys for the support in the past year and all of your questions and comments wait till you see whats in store for 2010. Next week I am going back down to Arizona for a little javelena and mule deer hunting with president of Starrflight Paul Morris. Then its off to the ATA show to meet up with my sponsors and the Sportsman Channel program director. I'll post pics as soon as I can so......you know........STAY TUNED....

Updated Nov 1 2009

Alright its been awhile I know, so whats new? LOL I have been real busy, between hunting and my job(s) I have been swamped. The reason for my abscents is because its deer season and of the TV show. OH yeah thats right you didn't know did ya. My pilot was approved by the Sportsmans Channel, WOOHOO!! Yeah thats right! Now the work begins, getting sponsors, time slot negotiations, quarter choosing man the list is long. To be honest its alot of work getting into this part of the industry. But the network must see something in my work or they wouldn't be working with me. OK now you know back to the real world. I have been hunting as much as time will allow. John McGill (Bowhunter4e) came down a few weeks back to hunt deer, he seen lots of deer but wasnt able to connect but he did bag this turkey on Kenny's Mountain, first ever with a bow. Image

NICE bird John! We were filming for the show you wont believe the hunt. As of today I have put down 2 doe for the freezer both on video, now I'm working on a buck. Havent seen a shooter yet. I have film crews in AZ working like dawgs, they are going couse deer hunting (rifle) this weekend should connect they saw some nice ones this past weekend scouting. Another crew (Clark Dixon) in is western KY, thats right KY, working on a rutting buck should be able to get it done we are praying. Clark has over 5 hrs of footage from Alaska, its amazing the story, seems they crashed the plane! Nobody died or was seriously injured but they did have to rough it out for a few extra weeks on the tundra. All I can say is in order for them to survive they had to hunt, "Hunt to Live", I can tell you this a few caribou and a 72" moose was involved. A must see for sure. Alright I'm out Stay Tuned......

Be sure to join in on the action as I hunt elk with the president of Starrflight Paul Morris in his home state of Arizona. Season opens September 11,2009

Sorry for not posting sooner I have been chasin' after hunters chasin' after elk. I am hunting with Paul Morris Pres. of Starrflight and Josh Jackson his Tech Support guy they have tags I don't I am just filming. We havent been able to get close enough yet although we have had several close encounters 3 in total. Day 1 Sept 11, we found ourselves on a ridge across from some cow elk with a bull bugling from the meadow below he went to the cows figures. That afternoon we got on a whole herd with a very nice bull trailing behind a cow busted us and took him out of range. The next morning day 2 we had a 340 bull come into 60 yrds when he spooked, we were moving twards him and him to us it happens we met just a few minutes to early. It was very exciting and I got some great footage with him screamin' like crazy. I wish I had a tag maybe one day I will get drawn for AZ. Heres a few pics.

Updated Sept 6, 2009

I am not able to hunt today, for one it rained and being a holiday weekend I have family in from out of state so I am gonna bless them with my presents lol. I did hunt yesterday though and it was a pretty good day to say the least, I did n't shoot anything but I did see the deer movement and set up some trail cameras to do some scouting for me while I'm in AZ. Yesterday morning I hunted here at the house and saw a little spike buck he was long antlered about 8 inches he needs several years. I think I found out why the 8 point I had on video from my DLC camera hasnt been around lately. I found a fresh rub, he shed his velvet and has changed his pattern but I'm sure hes here someplace. Heres a pic of the rub from yesterday morning.

Image

Its on a tree about 2 inches in dia.notice the shavings on the ground that tells me its only a few days old. In the afternoon I went to my other location and only saw a spotted fawn it was a buck. Future trophy maybe he can come see me in about 5 yrs lol. I only saw movement in the woods nothing else but it gives me a handle on whats going on. It was hot a full moon and only the first day its my way of scouting kinda from the treestand it works for me. I know the skeeters were terrible I forgot my thermocell now Im scratching like I have fleas lol they were so bad that I wised I had a tail to swat them with! I'll drop a line after next time I hunt hopefully tomorrow.

Day:1 Let the Adventure Begin

Started out this morning at 4am from my home and started my jorney to Moffett Quebec. After 14 hrs of travel we made it to North Bay Ontario where we pitched camp at the Travel Lodge. We would have made better time but there was road destruction at Detroit where we crossed into Winsor Ontario. Also traffic around Toranto was unusually heavy, took over 1 1/2 hrs to get through it. All in all it was a good days trip nothing bad to say here are a couple pics from today. They arent in order just random. Stay Tuned tomarrow we hunt!

Day 2-7 The Condensed Version with Pics

Oh Man!! I want to first apologize for not posting here while I was gone. I want to explain. I was under the impression that I would be able to post pics with the satellite phone I was wrong I was only able to do text and I didn't feel it would be right for all of you not to be able to see the pictures. Plus the signal was intermitent and we were dropping calls every few minute during our conversations, so I decided to wait untile I returned home.

We arrived at base camp, Camp Grassy Narrows, around noon on May 30th under cloudy conditions, little did we know that weather would have such an ill effect on the hunt. After everybody unpacked and shot their bows the guides proceeded to deal out the bait locations and assign group leaders for delivery and pickup of the hunters. I had 3 other hunter I would be taking out and picking up, I know my way around most of the area I was hunting so it made the guides job easier. The 3 guys I had with me were from my group who traveled with me to hunt. The fist day was a no bear day, the weather was windy and rainy. Although the one hunter that used a gun missed a bear due to the fact she needed to have a rest for here rifle. I gave here one of my bow hangers so she could screw it in the tree for a rest.  Day 2 it rained like mad house again no bears, the cold shut down the flies and really dampend the spirits of my hunters. I encouraged them by telling them we had plenty of time left, something they would have to remind me of later.

Day 3 things changed 2 of my guys relocated due to a stand issues or the lack there of, one stand site was for gun hunters and due to the number of hunters Bob Button had to stay on the ground for 2 days until we found him an opening in a new location. The other hunters setup was blocked by this dang raging creek that decided to wash out the bridge to his bait, not that it was much of a bridge anyway more like a pit fall trap if you ask me. Even though Bob relocated he was able to shaft his bear at a mear 10yrs, the Grimreaper disbatched the bear with in 75yrds.

Bob Button

Across Lake Simard and 4 miles up the Ottowa River another of my hunters shot a nice bear, Scott Jackson took his bear at 9:24 pm from with in 20 yrds. He decided to wait till morning and have help to retrieve his bear after all in the thick bush of Quebec finding a bear in the dark is difficult not to mention dangerous armed only with a bow.

The gal  ,Sheila Hayes ,I loned my bow hanger got her bear too that day, she shot it across the small river that ran under her stand. The recovery was short and it was a good bear it was her first. I think next time she is gonna be using a crossbow.

Sheila Hayes

Day 4 it rained and we even had a few snow showers in the morning over all it was miserable the hunters who hunted saw no bears, the rest of them enjoyed camp life and relaxed.  Day 5 the weather was trying to get lined out, windy but warm it left our Thermocells useless aginst the black flies. Despite the wind and the flies 2 more of my hunters took good bear. Tim one of the guys that I dropped of took a great looking bruin using his bow, the shot was less than 20 yrs and he watched the bear go down.

Mr. Clean with Mr. Black

Lynne Lundsford my wifes aunt took her best bear yet a beautiful black boar with hair as long as my hand. She had taken 3 other bear but this one was by far her best and the first she took using her crossbow, the Grimreaper broadhead made it possable for Lynn to see her bear fall.

Lynnard-bear-skinard

Day 6 another one of my hunters who is very new to bow hunting ,Jeff Hancock, showed real spirit and alot of patience by staying on the same bait for the first 5 days. Everynight his bait would be destroyed, I went in one evening to bait his site and put a 18ft log with a 18" diamater on his bucket, the next day it was laying 3ft from the bucket. Good thing he stayed or he might not have gotten his trophy bear. The shot was around 15yrds and the bear went 50 I was their for the recovery.

Jeff Hancock

I came in on the 6th night and was told that Jeff shot his bear, I told them we would recover him in the morning as we had done in the past 5 bears. Its always best to wait till light to go after bear they can get nasty if they are not dead yet. I was feeling very bad  my allergies were tearing me up, this was my 3rd pollen season this year one in Alabama and the other at my home. I decided to fallout early and try to gather my thoughts in the morning. In the past days I was able to go and help track all of my hunters bears, let me rephrase that, my new friends bears. I stayed busy helping them find thier bears and taking pictures of them after the recovery. I was satisfied with this and very proud of their shooting skills considering they had never hunted bear. I live for this stuff!

And On The Seventh Day He Rested

Day 7  now it got hot today and if I said the flies were bad I would be lying.....they were worse than my limited vocabulary can describe.  It has came down to the last day, and everybody had gottten their bear except one. Hmmm who didn't get their bear yet? There were seven of us and yep I was looking at the possability of going how without a bear, sometimes it happens like that. Although I would be bummed I always realize it can happen. I was having trouble deciding what to do quit and go home or one last attempt, I had hunted the same spot for the 1st 4 days and saw nothing, the bait went cold whoknows why? I hunted on the Ottowa River for 2 days but the wind kept blowing twards the bait and swirling. I remembered the story I was told by Cash one of the head guides about a gun hunter missing a nice bear on Timberline 2 bait, the only problem was I would have to hunt off the ground it had no stand only a blind 64yrds from the bait. I would have to use my new blind, oh man I brought it just incase I never really expected to have to use it. Man what do I do???? My crew kept telling me to go for it, I thought they were my friends??? LOL They are and I did what they said. I left early so I could get stuff set up and be ready for prime time. I arrived at the site at 4:17 pm and readied my gear, I had my camera, tripod, chair, thermocell, 2 bags of bait, the blind, and oh yeah my trusty bow equiped with 3 Grimreaper tipped Victory arrows. The wind was really shift as I approched a flat spot a mere 18yrds from the bait site. I stopped behind a small evergreen tree to servey the site for a blind setup. The bait wasnt hit, this is good or can be bad you never know. I started easing my gear to the ground trying to be quiet as a mouse, when suddenly I heard the sound of a bucket handle fall against one of the buckets. I eased up and peeked throught the small tree that shielded me, and what did I see........nows the time I say my catch phrase Stay Tun  what you want me to continue?  Alright, I was standing their on the ground with nothing more than a bush between me and the largest black bear I have ever seen in the wild. I froze....my heart jumped....I felt a cold feeling ziggzagg throught my body as he was staring me down. The only thought I had was this might not be good, keep in mind its the rut for bear and I had helped recover 6 bears in the past few days my boots had bear sent on them from real bears not to mention I was carring 30lbs of sweet cakes. This thought raced through my mind which was telling my legs to get the rest of me the crap out of here. The big bear turned and started pulling the buckets apart, I squatted and thought I'm doing this. I quietly and quickly removed my camera and set the tripod up for the shot. The bear was now digging in the bucket with his head consield from my movement and some of my sound. I got it all setup in less than 45 seconds. I was shaking, trying to calm my nerves, contemplating the out come of this. I drew my bow (did I mention I had a bow and no GUN?) and stood up behind my camera, the bear heard this and turned and faced me.........he snapped his jaws.......I settled my 20yrd pin on the left side of the whit "V" that adorned his chest......I said a little prayer and touched the trigger.............it flew in slow motion in my mind then a loud TWACK! and the bear convused with a sort of growling moan and ran to his right. I could hear him crashing throught the brush asn then..........Silence. I fell back to my knees and said another prayer giving thanks for a good shot. I gathered my gear in silence and ran the past events through my mind frame by frame. I left the sene and returned to my truck and looked at my watch it was 4:33 pm. I went for help and all of my friends came to help recover my bear. He ran only 50yrds shot through the heart the arrow exited through the bck leg of the off side and was not recovered but the FOB was. This was my first from the ground and the first to tip the scales at 300 lbs.

May 25, 2009

I hope everybody had a good weekend, I know I played hard. Went fishing Saturday and caught a few bluegill (bream, panfish) for a meal of fresh fish. They were biting really good on wax worms(bee moth, grubs) My wife and I both ended up tired of catching them, if that is possable, and decided to call it a day about 5:00 pm. I will be glad to get back to work so i can get some rest lol just kiddin'. I leave out this week for the bear hunt and I will try to post as much as I can at least everyother day for sure but will try to everyday, depends on time. I have a date for the next BTT Live video chat and will release it when I get back. It will be in June for sure.

Image

May 20, 2009

Alright I went fishing instead of working, I'm guilty! Oh man it was a great day here in KY and I took advantage of it by going fishing. I caught about 20 bluegill(bream) and 4 catfish all which my family and I enjoyed for supper tonight, mmmmmm they were good. I was thinking about the site while I was fishing and got to wondering why I have had over 15,000 visitors to the site and only 370 people sign up for the free bow. I guess most people don't want to win a free bow, it only makes the odds better for those of you who have signed up. Enough with that. I have my ducks in a row with the next blog series and for the next LIVE chat going to be announced in the next few weeks. I am ready and have the feeling if you miss the next Live chat you will be kicking yourself for a long time after. I'll be back tomarrow and fill you in on more details......

May 7 2009

Ok its been a few days since I have been turkey hunting, chores, work, and family have kept me from the woods. Not a big deal you have to take care of responsablity first, or you will have trouble later. I hunted the first couple days of the week but the gobblers are still henned up tight, might be that way the rest of the season. Well I was at work today and got a package in the mail WOO HOO!! I recieved the Limbsaver rests and accessories for the videos. I'm glad to get them and should have the DZ-36 within a week. Its took so long because the machine shop they use has been over run with work, not a problem I had to get my work done anyway. I will be filming the tips vids very soon. Stay Tuned....

 Day:15 May 2 Temp 64 scattered showers

Image

Well as you can see Its finally made me go crazy lol, No its my camera man Justin Time hes cool but kinda weird bad breath too. Anyway I didn't hunt for a few days since I got the tom on Monday since it rained almost everyday and I wanted to give them a break. I didn't the morning it was raining, decided to hunt the afternoon. I had a close call with a gobbler he came in at 54 yrds the first time and then at 39 the second. I just didn't feel comfortable enough to shoot I want it to be right. Turkey vitals are small no need to chance making a bad shot. He strutted and gobbled for over a half hour, I could have shot him with a shotgun but thats bow huntin'. I'll get after them this week the weather is going to get better. I decided to take today(Sunday) to catch up on the blog and some videos.        Stay Tuned....

Day:10 April 27 Temp at Dawn 67 midday 84

 Image  Image

I decided to try to go to where I thought they might go this morning and once again he got lucky!! As the night turned into day in the bottom below my home I was already setup waiting on the ole gobbler to fly down. In the past I have seen turkey cross into the cow pasture from the woods in this spot many times. They had been roosting on the ridge directly behind the gap in the fence so I decided to ambush them there. And wouldn't you know this morning he decided to fly across to the hill top pasture and strutt, I could see him at about 80yrds just doing his thing. Then suddenly from my left in the woods I heard another gobble,  could this bird be coming through the fence gap? Of course not silly you can't predict where  a turkey will go, and it was true he crossed in the tangled snag about 100yrs from me. This guy was P.O.ed he was making some weird purring growl sound and ran up the hill where the first bird had landed. They started displaying agressively and making some strainge pur clucking sounds while pacing and staring eachother down. The second bird must have not wanted any of the first bird and backed down and started submissive, then the first bird, he was missing a few tail feathers I could see, went to where he had landed and bread a hen right there in the feild. I had a front row seat for nature at its finest, and caught it all on video how cool is that. I waited for the turkey to go over the hill to make my retreat.

I decided to move my location to another place I hadn't tried figured I was on a roll, and I was right. I started out with my blind shit and a camo shirt on under it ( first pic) after walking for about 1/2 of a mile I had to peel off a layer. I set up my Double Bull 360 and started with a few soft calls, it wasn't long before I heard a lone gobble. I didn't make another call, after about 10 minutes I saw a red head moving towards my setup, it was a jake. He kept coming closer he was leagal and fixin' to be in trouble, then I noticed another turkey coming the same path this one was a long beard followed by yet another long beard WOW things were looking up now. I didn't want to get my hopes up so I remained calm and just consentrated on my camera and getting god video of them. After they were there for a few minutes I knew I would get my shot, after I readied my self I picked one out and let my arrow fly.................THWACK!! he jumped straight up in the air at least 5 ft or so and then ran like he stole somethin'. I noticed he was dragging his right wing I flipped the blind off me and pursued him as fast as a fat boy can run(which is prettuy fast when chasing food). He went about 50 yrds and was dead when I got there all but a couple flops left in him. WWOOOO HOOOO! I got him thats him and me in the other pic. I'm gonna take a day off and try for my second tag on the 29th.

Image

Day:  8&9  April 25-26 Temp 72 at dawn 88 at mid day

I woke up early and went after the closest bird I heard gobbling, should have slept in! It turns out once again he was henned up tight, no use calling to him he was content. I deceided to exit and try not to disturb the flock. Later in the afternoon (April 25) I heard him gobble one time while I was tending to my vegtable garden, I quickly changed my cloths and went blindless. I eased to a nice hiding spot where I could see 75yrds and hid in the cover of cedar tops broke by the ice storm back in Feb. After a 20 minute or so wait I called softly, something moved at 50yrds. It was a full grown coyote it didn't take me long to settle my 45 yrd pin on his vitals as he was slipping past my setup. As I released I  yelped and when he stopped released my arrow..................THWACK!! He jumped straight up about 5ft and came spinning to the ground, my arrow found its mark and I watched him drop   about 15 yrds from where I shot him. Neadless to say I didn't get a chance at a gobbler but I couldn't pass up a coyote with my bow. I'll post pics here soon. On the 26th I decided to take the day off and handle some chores that needed to be took care of I needed the break and so did tom. In the morning I have a new plan, gonna hit the creek bottom and see if I can call him in as he goes to the feild to strutt with his harum.

Day:6&7  April 23-24 ( ok its an everyother day blog) Temp 63 at dawn 77 at mid day

I didn't take any pics I figured it would just boar you. Day 6 was a flop, I got close to the gobbler I roosted the night before. Unknowing to me he had 15, yeah 15 girlfriends. He must be a stud! I almost had him but while moving to get set for the shot a hen saw me and gave the warning cluck that made him stay on the hill to instead of following her path which was 25 yrds from me. I opted not to take my blind and just use camo netting instead. BAD idea wont skimp again. Day 7 was even more exciting. Ole' big lungs was sounding off on the left side of the road this morning, I mean hammerin'!! I went to the top of the hill ( Kenny's Mountain) to see  if they would come to the food plot. I was right but Biggin' stayed out at 35yrds, Man how does he know?? I was able to get my bow turned and almost drawn when the hens with him spooked and ran he ran off in the opposite direction. Then he started gobbling again, I have a few screen shots of him standing behind a skinny little branch. The branch kept me from shooting. I want it to be clear when I shoot him no obstructions at all. Anyway I got 2 roosted tonight lets see how it goes wrong in the morning. I'll do my best, good luck to you if you hunt .

Day:5 April 22, 2009 (I skipped a few days  I know) Temp 39 at dawn 47 at mid day

Alright let me explain, day 2 & 3 April 19-20 it rained cats and dogs I should have known the weather man was right for a change. Day 4 April 21 the morning started out pretty good but became nasty real fast forcing me to leave with my camera and other equipement that couldn't get wet. That brings us to today. The temp was 39 degrees not a typical morning for hunting spring turkey considering opening day was like 83, Kentucky weather what are ya gonna do? Anyway the first pic is me freezing my tail off in the blind, the second is the sun finally making it high enough for me to feel its warmth through the blind wall. What a good feeling it was, I hate winter it never seems to want to go away here. Just bfore day break I heard ole' tom start his morning thundering, man everytime a crow would call he would loose it like a mad man . One gobble after another WOW I was beguining to get all gitty and then I heard his girl friends. Thats right Friends from what I heard it sounded like 4 flew to him figures!! I decided to just wait him out in silence, and after about 3 hours I heard a lonesome gobble, I answered it with a few soft yelps followed by a series of purrs and clucks. He never made another sound, but this is common with the birds around here they don't gobble much when they are on the ground. I held tight....then suddenly I saw a shadow move through the cedars directly in front of me. Then I saw a blood red head appear, it was a long beard, my pulse quickened.....he took a few steps and studdied the area. With no warning he turned and stepped back in to the thicket and disappeardm I was about to freak. After a t least 2 minutes he returned and this time he came closer only to cross the logging road and go in to the cedars on that side. He had me tore up like a shoe hit by a lawn mower! All of a sudden he came back but this time he had a jake with him, this made things worse. A crow flew by, I heard it wings beating, and the jake ducked, I almost laughed, again the crow dived making a strange growl and the jake took off running like he had been wipped before. And his antics made the long beard run too. MAN I can't catch a break with these turkey, thats why I call it "Spring Madness" cause they make me mad , but I love it. Well that was today, I roosted a loner tonight I never heard any more birds fly up and he gobbled everytime I blew my owl call till it was pitch black. Keep your fingers crossed maybe tomarrow I will be able to get a shot with my bow. Stay Tuned....

Well first off I want to say no bird. The sunrise was something to see though, I never get tired of seeing them. I woke up at 5:00am and headed to my opening day spot mainly just to listen and see whats up with the turkey. As every good spot should be it wasnt a let down, I heard 3 birds gobbling directly in front of me at about 100yrds. I broke out my newest call and did just a little talking to them. Those birds werent interested one bit, figures, they prolly had some hens with them. It wasnt long before they pitched from the limb and headed to the open feild to do their strutting and some courting, I figure anyway. I waited for a couple hours calling sparingly a hen ran in on me  like to have made me have a heart attack thought she was a gobbler hate when that happens. Then a little later had a doe inspect my Double Bull she didn't like it and snorted then ran off waving at me.Around 11:30am I headed to where I thought they would go after they lost them hens and I was right they showed about an hour later, but they must have not liked my decoy they came in at about 50yrds and looked confused then wandered back into the cedars they came from I wonder why they do that sometimes?. Well one day down now I know a few things I'll let you know what happens tomarrow, they are callin' for rain, hope they are wrong.
